🌳 Historic Roots in the Western Reserve

Hudson was founded in 1799 by David Hudson, a settler from Connecticut, as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. He built the first log house in Summit County, which still stands marked today  .

🎓 “Yale of the West” & Western Reserve Academy

Established in 1826, Western Reserve College and Preparatory School earned the nickname “the Yale of the West.” Although the college relocated to Cleveland in 1882 (eventually becoming Case Western Reserve University), the original campus is now home to Western Reserve Academy, a prestigious boarding and day preparatory school  .

🔭 Home to the Loomis Observatory

Built in 1838, the Loomis Observatory is the oldest observatory in the United States still in its original location—a rare scientific treasure on the Western Reserve Academy grounds  .

🛤️ A Rail & Rebirth Era

Hudson blossomed with canal and railroad connections in the mid-1800s. After a major fire on Main Street in 1892 and the college’s departure in 1882, industrialist James W. Ellsworth returned and transformed Hudson into a model town—planting trees, installing utilities, and erecting the iconic Hudson Clock Tower in 1912  .

🤝 A Center of Abolitionist History

The Brown family, including Owen Brown and his son John Brown, grew up in Hudson, where John made his first public vow to end slavery. The village was a known stop on the Underground Railroad, with dozens of sites linked to its abolitionist legacy
